A Chandra X-ray detection of the L dwarf binary Kelu-1 Simultaneous Chandra and Very Large Array observations

چکیده
Context. Magnetic activity in ultracool dwarfs, as measured in X-rays and Hα, shows a steep decline after spectral type M7-M8. So far, no L dwarf has been detected in X-rays. In contrast, L dwarfs may have higher radio activity than M dwarfs. Aims. We observe L and T dwarfs simultaneously in X-rays and radio to determine their level of magnetic activity in the context of the general decline of magnetic activity with cooler effective temperatures. Methods. The field L dwarf binary Kelu-1 was observed simultaneously with Chandra and the Very Large Array. Results. Kelu-1AB was detected in X-rays with LX = 2.9+1.8 −1.3 × 10 25 ergs s−1, while it remained undetected in the radio down to a 3σ limit of LR ≤ 1.4×1013 ergs s−1 Hz−1. We argue that, whereas the X-ray and Hα emissions decline in ultracool dwarfs with decreasing effective temperature, the radio luminosity stays (more or less) constant across M and early-L dwarfs. The radio surface flux or the luminosity may better trace magnetic activity in ultracool dwarfs than the ratio of the luminosity to the bolometric luminosity. Conclusions. Deeper radio observations (and at short frequencies) are required to determine if and when the cut-off in radio activity occurs in L and T dwarfs, and what kind of emission mechanism takes place in ultracool dwarfs.

An X-ray Jet from a White Dwarf – Detection of the Collimated Outflow from Ch Cygni with Chandra
Most symbiotic stars consist of a white dwarf accreting material from the wind of a red giant. A growing number of these objects have been found to produce jets. Analysis of archival Chandra data of the symbiotic system CH Cygni reveals faint extended emission to the south, aligned with the optical and radio jets seen in earlier HST and VLA observations. CH Cygni thus contains only the second k...
متن کاملX-ray sources in dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster and the nearby field
The extent to which dwarf galaxies represent essentially scaled down versions of giant galaxies is an important question with regards the formation and evolution of the galaxy population as a whole. Here, we address the specific question of whether dwarf galaxies behave like smaller versions of giants in terms of their X-ray properties. We discuss two samples of around 100 objects each, dwarfs ...
متن کاملThe XMM - Newton / Chandra monitoring campaign of the Galactic center region
We present the first results of our X-ray monitoring campaign on a 1.7 square degree region centered on Sgr A* using the satellites XMM-Newton and Chandra. The purpose of this campaign is to monitor the behavior (below 10 keV) of X-ray sources (both persistent and transient) which are too faint to be detected by monitoring instruments aboard other satellites currently in orbit (e.g., Rossi X-ra...
متن کاملA DEEP LOOK AT THE T-TYPE BROWN DWARF BINARY INDI Bab WITH Chandra AND ATCA
We present deep observations of the nearby T-type brown dwarf binary Indi Bab in radio with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and in X-rays with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Despite long integration times, the binary (composed of T1 and T6 dwarfs) was not detected in either wavelength regime. We reached 3 upper limits of 1 23 1012 and 1 74 1012 erg s−1 Hz−1 for the radio luminosity at 4.8...
